It has a flawless Parkerized finish, very smooth internal milling, the slide has a very slight play if you really work at it.īut overall the gun handles very well and shoots great. I did some research on various forums and pretty much read only trash talk about A-O firearms. I took it out a couple of months ago and right out of the box it shot 2-3' groups at 15-20 feet. Can you tell me when it was made? I purchased the M1911 and it sat in my closet unused for the last 17 years.

The serial number is E 05552 and I purchased it in January 1994. I have a couple of questions re: my West Hurley A-O M1911.
Your pistol is one of several dozen aftermarket versions of the Colt Goverment Model and while a good servicable is nothing special in the aftermarket world Custom parts for it at both drop-ins and gunsmithing required. These parts require a frame cut and a hole in the slot.the FP also differs. I(f you pull up the online schematic of the Colt 'O frame' on this site.you are looking for parts:-31.-57 in the frame and -10 and -33 in the slide. You have to press in the aforementioned plunger and hold it there to get the FP to move. With the slide in this position.you should NOT be able to push the FP forward and have it extend from the slide face. With the slide pulled back and locked to the rear you can see the plunger protruding from the underside of the slide. This part will depress a plunger mounted in the slide that is a firing pin block. There are parts for this mounted in the reciever.the RH rear and is visable as a 'finger' that levers up when the trigger is pulled rearward.

The series 70(and prior versions) do not have the firing pin block parts. The exceptions will be on those models that differ from a standard model(the short barrel versions,mainly) The major difference between a series 70 and a series 80 has to do with Lawyer added parts. To date after 9 years it has had around a dozen recoil springs and firing pin springs (I change them together.), one cracked barrel bushing, one replaced barrel link and slide stop, one broken firing pin, 2 firing pins replaced due to wear, 2 firing pin stops and a couple of stripped grip screw bushings.
As a yardstick to measure those 3 performance by, I just checked my carry/IPSC/IDPA gun.round count over 35,000 rounds of hardball equivalent or higher level ammo. And yes, Colt has built some crap guns (they are not my favorite flavor of 1911) but not at the consistently miserable quality I have personally witnessed with AO. All 3 guns are back at AO for repair and evaluation and will be sold as soon as the return. When I was a Marine armorer I would have called it a decent showing for 50 year old guns.but these were NEW firearms purchased for defense. These guns were purchased for the course (against the instructors recommendations) and the shooters had shot approx 500 to 750 rounds per month for the 2 months prior to the course and had thrown the factory mags away after numerous problems then purchased Wilson and McMormick mags for the course.
